Overview of cold regions mobility modeling at CRREL
نویسندگان
چکیده
Over the last several decades, the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) has extensively tested and analyzed issues related to vehicle performance in winter. Using this knowledge and the experimental database, models were developed to capture the important elements for cold regions mobility performance. These models span a range of resolutions and fidelities and include three-dimensional finite element models of tire–terrain interaction, vehicle dynamics models of vehicles on winter surfaces, semi-empirical cold regions algorithms for winter performance within the NATO reference mobility model (NRMM), all-season vehicle performance in force-on-force war-gaming simulations, and vehicle–surface interaction for real-time vehicle simulators. Each of these types of models is presented along with examples of their application. 2004 Published by Elsevier Ltd on behalf of ISTVS.

CUES—a study site for measuring snowpack energy balance in the Sierra Nevada
Accurate measurement and modeling of the snowpack energy balance are critical to understanding the terrestrial water cycle. Most of the water resources in the western US come from snowmelt, yet statistical runoff models that rely on the historical record are becoming less reliable because of a changing climate. For physically based snow melt models that do not depend on past conditions, ground ...

Simple countermeasures against passive (thermal) infrared intrusion detection systems (IDSs) and thermal imagers were tested in winter by U.S. Army Special Forces soldiers working with personnel of the U. S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL). Under certain site conditions, the countermeasures were very effective, enabling intruders to pass undetected by the infrared ...
متن کاملThe Potential of Earth Observation for the Analysis of Cold Region Land Surface Dynamics in Europe - A Review
Cold regions affect global, regional and local climate; oftentimes they are relevant for water supply, host valuable ecosystems, and support human livelihood. They are thus eminently important for human society. In the context of ongoing climate change, monitoring and understanding cold region land surface dynamics is essential for environmental scientists, stakeholders and decision makers. How...
متن کاملThe Health Mobility Is All True Mobility?; Comment on “Regional Incentives and Patient Cross-border Mobility: Evidence From the Italian Experience”
In their study, Brenna and Spandonaro analyzed the mobility into Italian regions. In particular, it analyzes the situation of 5 regions, with very different backgrounds. With this paper, we try to better define the meaning of health mobility and to find its underlying causes. Furthermore, we propose a strategy that could help in controlling mobility flows that currently are the source of health...
